In a IM (Instant Message) chat the other day I was asked how i got he extra desktop icons to show on my Ubuntu machine.
Here’s how:

  1. Press “Alt” + “F2″
  2. Enter “gconf-editor” in the “Run Application” box and click “Run”
  3. Expand the left tree accordingly “Apps” > “Nautilus” then select “Desktop”
  4. Remove the ticky box from “volumes_visible”
  5. Add ticky box to “computer_icon_visible”, “home_icon_visible”, “network_icon_visible”, “trash_icon_visible”
  6. You have now the desktop icons you wanted :)
