I have been waiting for this new build of Ubuntu since it was first announced. Even though i run primarily windows computers i have always kept one pc dedicated to Ubuntu… a old pIII933 with 512mb ram, 40gb HD, and a agp geforce 4 MX4000 64mb. As part of my testing i run the live desktop on the slowest pc i got… that happens to be a Celron 900 with 256mb ram and a pci ati radeon 9250 128 mb (the only pci video card i had). Ubuntu 7.10 booted up (rather slowly) and even had compiz enabled automaticly on basic setting i promptly set it to maximum and compiz still worked good.
I found the live handling of nvidia a bit annoying since it needs restricted drivers and the old install driver and restart X trick didn’t work for me this time. Once installed it ran as i was use to… the desktop effects work quite well on a old pIII with a 64mb geforce card… now is that one thing vista can do?
The apt-get plugin/extension integration into firefox is handy even tho it couldn’t install flash player when used via live cd.
It also worked good on my Black Macbook… mosly supported the apple hardware feature set. the laptop key functions woked but i was not able to set backligt to 0. Even the eject key worked… even tho it let me eject the live cd that i was running from.
Overall Ubuntu 7.10 is a good release… This shows that Linux has potential if they put serious effort into it.
